Julie Mehretu was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia and lives and works in New York City and Berlin. She received a Master’s of Fine Art with honours from The Rhode Island School of Design, a Bachelor’s from Kalamazoo College, and studied at University Cheik Anta Diop in Dakar, Senegal.

Mehretu is a recipient of many awards, including the Berlin Prize: Guna S. Mundheim Fellowship at The American Academy in Berlin, Germany (2007), The MacArthur Award (2005), and The American Art Award granted by The Whitney Museum of American Art (2005).

She has shown extensively in international and national exhibitions. Recent solo shows include Liminal Squared, Marian Goodman Gallery, NYC (2013); White Cube, London (2013); Mind Breath and Beat Drawings, Marian Goodman Gallery, Paris (2013); Julie Mehretu: Notations After the Ring, Metropolitan Opera House, Lincoln Center, New York (2010); and Julie Mehretu: Grey Area, Deutsche Guggenheim, Berlin & Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2009).

Mehretu's recent group exhibitions include The Gesture and the Sign, White Cube, Sao Paulo (2013); dOCUMENTA (13), Kassel, Germany (2012); The Bearden Project, Studio Museum in Harlem, NYC (2011); and On Line: Drawing Through the Twentieth Century, Museum of Modern Art, New York (2010).

Selected public collections include The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; The Museum of Modern Art, New York; National Gallery of Art, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C.; Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; and Whitney Museum of American Art, New York.

Mehretu will discuss her recent body of work created in the aftermath of the Arab Spring, as well as her long-standing interest in psychogeographies as a major generating force in her drawing and larger conceptual projects as a painter.
