Toronto-based Canadian artist Sandra Brewster has been invited to create a new site-specific installation at The Power Plant. Within the scope of this project, Brewster will transform our light- flooded Clerestory into an arboreal landscape soaring across both sides of the space. Brewster’s photo-based gel transfers, installed directly onto the gallery’s walls, will envelop visitors in a lush atmosphere. The scratches and ridges in her weathered images reference profound identity shifts that Caribbean immigrants go through when arriving in Canada, the complex and layered experiences of whom Brewster has been consistently exploring throughout her practice. Transforming the Clerestory into an evocative environment, Brewster contemplates how the memories and history of a homeland can be conjured in diasporic spaces. Inflected with her own experience, the space remains equally open-ended, in order to draw out the nuances of viewers’ experiences, as they interpret, situate, and internalize this landscape in relation to their personal, geographic, and cultural backgrounds.
