Future Fabric

Artist: Pae White

Pae White’s edition, Future Fabric (2010), is a unique piece in that no two editions are the same. White’s edition was made by carving into the top layer of a 3-pli fabric with a precision laser. The fabric is made of two layers of linen with a layer of thin aluminum in the middle. White has carved a pattern into the first layer of linen, revealing varying amounts of the aluminum. However, each carving is unique and the frame, matting and risers, which are integral to the piece, have been customized to replicate the colour and materiality of the linen. This edition reflects White’s attentive and playful manipulation of materials and her desire to push fabrics to their limits.
